AI Winter

A period when AI research funding and interest collapse due to unmet expectations. There were two major AI winters: 1974-1980 (after the Lighthill report) and 1987-early 1990s (after expert systems failed commercially). During the second winter, researchers rebranded their work to avoid the toxic "AI" label.
